Life of an Artist

Having the ability to create something extraordinary out of your hands is a gift you couldn’t trade for anything else. What is life of being an artist?

For me, it’s exhilarating, nerve-wracking, frustrating – a swirl of emotions. It’s a chaos you want yourself to get involved in.

I love the sense of freedom it gives me and the endless possibilities. It’s amazing how you can create your own kind of reality even with just your hands and a piece of paper, relive the good memories you once had, revisit the places, give yourself an escape, or build your own castle, or perhaps, create yourself a lover.

It’s amazing how you can picture yourself to any parts of the world, create your own world, and give life to anything that is in it.

I love how you can express your feelings on it. Like how your emotion just spills out of your hands and seeps into the canvas you’re creating.

Truly, dabbling in art is always a rough ride. Every stroke is like sudden turns, you never know what lies beyond the corner. Every result is an outcome you would never expect. But every outcome is worth the effort, whether it turned out great or something we dread to see, because there is always a learning you earn.

But being an artist isn’t that always enthusing.

Some days…some days are also gloomy.

It’s sometimes frustrating I must say. Comparison is always part of the game. You can never stop yourself from comparing your work from others. It’s like a dark cloud that always hovers around, feeding your insecurities and draining your drive to keep on.

And the worst?

The worst is when you run out of inspiration. It feels like your mind’s deep below in a void, nothing to draw, no rush of excitement, just…nothing at all…and there you are just staring at the blank piece of paper.

But sometimes what we fail to look at is the nature around us. It’s always got something to help us find that one tiny idea we look for. It could be in a form of a rain, the flowers, the animals, or the people around you.

As an artist, I love to just explore and see what nature could offer me. What’s good about it is that there’s always a surprise.

I love how one idea just pops up from finding a tiny insect or a flower. It’s so easy for us to think something beyond what it is real. Think of a tiny branch that fell off a tree. Could it just be by naughty birds? or perhaps, little fairies chasing around. Whatever the possibilities are. Let your imagination feed your mind to create something extraordinary – out of the ordinary.

You’ve got what it takes to give life to anything you create.

It lies in your hands.

It’s wonderful how you think of one character and her story just flows endlessly inside your mind, how you give life to it, how you make one art tell a story – even without the words – just by looking at it.

Whenever I paint, I always love to create scenarios, like capturing moments of the character’s life or the highlight of the story behind them which I always imagine in my mind. I think it just gives more life to the art itself and the characters are somewhat just truly existing. But the best part of it is that I feel like I was in the moment as well, like watching their lives in person.

When you’re deep into the piece you’re creating, the feeling becomes sureal I must say. It’s like you’re inside of one’s dream or a witness of one’s life event. You get carried away by the emotions you put into it, enchanted by the places, and subconsciously form an underlying story for everyone that sees it find it out themselves.

It’s amazing how it makes you feel free from the burdens of the world. That for some moments in life, you’ve got to create your own world that defies reality, to see beauty in humble places, to give color to whatever is dull on earth. That’s what you are here for. If you have that gift, use it, share it, treasure it, give a sense of beauty to things that others fail to see, to appreciate.

You see, there’s more to life of an artist. It is not just about the finished artwork, but the process, the story, the feelings that are involved into finishing it. The piece becomes a part of you.

It represents you – who you are and what you are.

It’s..YOU.
